DEVELOPMENT

Preamble

Whilst introduced in some EU universities as a Scientist, the webmaster and writer is essentially a very ordinary man with ideas. Ideas extend to all areas of financial investment and not just intellectual property.

In any invention or design it is necessary to have the idea first and then to possess the ability to thoroughly research or investigate the issue. To be an individual of determination with an insatiable appetite for knowledge, which knowledge, directs and dictates the direction of all design and development.

The problem with the production of ideas is the society in which we live and the tendency of those to say "I could have thought of that" taking credit for the production at the expense of the inventor or originator. It is thus that, to the detriment of the world those with ideas tend to be secretive, not wishing feel used.

In the First World, design is stagnated due to the extent of capital investment into industry on a theme, stocks of spares and work in progress thus implementation of change and positive development is often deferred.

By way of example, aeronautics dictate to every university undergraduate the most efficient way of passing through air. Air is in fact a solid and over the passage of time we have learnt of the most efficient way to cut through a solid. It is thus that we use a power saw rather than an axe. The Ancient Greeks developed the discus because as it spins, it flies, cutting through the air. We apply spiral grooves to gun barrels to make bullets spin in order to cut through the air. Yet, in defiance of that wealth of learning, accumulated over centuries, the aircraft we fly resemble an axe propelled by huge jet engines – to go faster we attach larger engines and streamline the current design theme, perfecting the curvature of the wings to create maximum lift.

It is an aeronautical fact, that should we redesign the aircraft based on the principals of those Ancient Greeks it would fly faster and further with a greater payload on the same quantum of fuel, be able to land vertically and be resistant to air turbulence.

The reason for lack of development is simply the investment made into the current shape developed on a theme from such aeronautical pioneers as the Wright Brothers.

A classic example is the Concorde, its engines creating increased speed. It was one of the greatest designs of our time on that theme. (Unknown to the passengers, the general public and perhaps even the owners, once in service it exceeded its design parameters of time, which may well have been a contributing factor to accidents that occurred.)

The Windmill, a national symbol of Holland and the Netherlands, a truly great design by our ancestors utilising wind power, the energy of the future. We design on a theme, developing it, computerising it, making the blades individually revolve to effect speed control in high winds, problem is, its costly and the wrong design.

The design can be made considerably more efficient, imagine the energy loss simply turning the impeller to face the wind, coupled with, the cost of maintaining a maximum speed whilst preventing excessive speed.

The impeller should be horizontal and not on the vertical plane. The blades should be in the shape of a spoon rather like a manometer, maximising efficiency in much the same way as a spinnaker on a yacht, save that they be individually hinged. Thus it can be seen that on the horizontal plane, maximum use of the wind is achieved from any direction, centrifugal force at high speed throwing the opposite blade to its fullest hinged extreme thus eliminating over-speeding and creating a breaking balance without the aid of a computer. The generator could be positioned at ground level thus lightening the entire structure leading to further reduction in cost and reduced maintenance costs. Such improvement would achieve greater efficiency and output, meaning less units, less individual cost resultant in international export, funding development costs.

Currently the Blair Government proposes to erect wind farms all over Britain which will have the effect of stifling development in wind energy for another decade in order to cover up the error of expenditure.

In discussing energy above there is a need to mention solar energy, one of the most expensive methods of producing energy. The initial cost of a solar cell plus its anticipated life sadly makes it an expensive alternative. Again the output is such that even if we were to cover the United Kingdom with solar panels we would not produce its energy requirement, to even consider same is to revert to a flat world.

It is thus, to cover cost of development for the space program, solar panels were widely and successfully marketed to the third world.

Solar Panels may be found all over the world and, to increase efficiency, they come at great expense complete with computer, tracking equipment and electric motors in order that the panel may track the sun. In Physics we are all taught the advantage of bi-metal strips or strips of dissimilar material bonded together and the way that they bend under heat.

Imagine a rectangular table, where the legs are made of bi-metal strips supporting a solar panel. When the suns rays strike a table leg from any direction it will bend, tipping the table towards the sun thus tracking the suns rays without computers or motors, in much the same way as the sun flower has achieved its objective since time began. An example of First World over-design on a theme.

Pollution of our atmosphere has become a major world problem. Almost every household possesses a refrigerator, in the main, powered by compressor and utilising Diclorodiflouromethane refrigerant which when heated turns into deadly "nerve gas".

When the compressor burns out electrically, because the electrical motor winding is internally sealed with the gas, it is possible that the refrigerator transforms effectively into a canister of lethal "nerve gas". The destruction of scrap refrigerators has thus become a recognised international problem.

There has been little design to overcome the problem due to capital equipment and stocks although the solution is relatively simple. There is a need to change the compressor design, to develop a simple compressor without a crankshaft similar to that used on the Lancaster bomber during the Second World War which never failed.

This way all electrical wires could be replaceable and external to the gas filled compressor thus eliminating the pollution and safety problem caused by burnt refrigerant.

The webmaster could continue with examples but believes the point adequately made.

The First Worlds trade policies and political trade barriers actually make it extremely vulnerable, to the extent, that one individual could theoretically cause economic chaos to say Britain or America.

By way of example, it is possible and relatively simple for an individual to control a basic essential commodity within a First World country causing inflation, public panic buying and the eventual instability of the current government.

The massive North Sea Oil Project was underway in Britain in 1974 and it occurred to the writer that so large was the expansion within the oil industry that there was bound to be the eventual shortage of essential equipment leading to profit and control.

Research indicated that whilst there were sufficient oil rigs there was insufficient oil pipe being produced and although the American oil companies were expected to buy British product, British Steel did not produce API products for the oil industry.

Further research revealed that the major oil companies, being in the position of paying huge amounts daily for an oil rig whilst awaiting pipe, had broken those regulations imposed during the cold war with Russia by ordering pipe from Russian manufacturers proposing to have it delivered via Italy. It was API monogrammed and tested at the respective Italian port as Italian product. The writer assumed ownership of the orders by simply offering to pay the factories 10% performance bond for late delivery and pay the factory an extra 10% as a bonus in the certain knowledge there could be no complaint.

The resultant potential financial loss to the oil companies was immense, to the extent that the writer, being accustomed to providing trade references to large companies prior to trading, decided to reverse the system by insisting that the oil companies send a bank to bank telex to his bankers confirming they had sufficient funds in their bank account to purchase the goods, prior to any meeting.

Whilst one oil company, Monsanto Oil, claiming to hold substantial stock in First National Bank, initially refused on the basis of embarrassment given the relative small amount of their respective requirement, they promptly complied when the writer revealed arrangements to sell same to their competitors.

Their bankers stated that they were indeed "able to meet a commitment of sterling180000" and thus were eligible to attend a meeting and purchase what was their original order made to the Russian steel manufacturer. It is thus that Russian oil pipe joins the North Sea oil rigs to the Scottish mainland in contravention of US and British government trade regulations at that time and, the writer earned the congratulations of such large independent oil barons as "Duke" Rudman of Rudman Oil, Dallas, Texas. One of the largest independent oil men in Dallas whose life style was not unlike that of JR Ewing, the star of that popular soap "Dallas".

During the same year, May 1974, there was a national sugar shortage in the United Kingdom for the first time since the Second World War to the extent that people were panic buying and Tate and Lyles in Liverpool closed its doors.

Although the national news media continued to endorse the shortage there was, in fact, no shortage, Britains sugar was actually on board ships in Rotterdam as described in the bank to bank telex on this site.

At the time the writer had the option on Britains entire supply of sugar when the price increased from around 200 pounds per ton as it remains today to well over 400 pounds a ton, the highest price ever, in living history, on the Paris/ world sugar market. It is thus that the writer was a part of what still remains a world record, a world first.

The writer emphasises and stresses that the above was never about money but rather a game of achievement for amusement in his early twenties, relief from boredom, rather like chess or those computer games of today. But it, nevertheless, serves to illustrate the vulnerability of the First World, resultant of negligent political decision and legislation. Dealing in commodities in short supply always attracts legitimate cheap unlimited funding where return on safe short-term investment is normally measured in moderate single digit percentage and returns of over 100% normally unheard of.

A clear example of self confessed economic vulnerability is the way the heads of state of the USA and Britain felt the need to use force in Iraq because they had lost control over the economic methods of financial sanctions resultant of seriously flawed international trade policies and multinational control.

The same cannot be said for those mercenary British politicians and/ or their associates who secured agencies with European companies such as Indesit immediately prior to Britain joining the EU. It was sad indeed to see British companies such as Bendix, the Rolls Royce of washing machines, and countless others, close their doors because they could not compete with the cheaper mass produced washing machines and domestic appliances of Italy.

Theoretically, the Third World is at an advantage. In much the same way as Japan installed the latest technology and became a major player in the auto and electronics industry, Zimbabwe could have followed the same principals, concentrating on industry making full use of Trade Agreements such as the Lome Convention.

With dynamic industrial direction they could have, by way of example, taken American products, part manufactured and assembled them locally, thus complying with local content requirements, re-exported same to the EU taking advantage of, duty free tariffs, in terms of Trade Agreements. American products are subjected to excessive duties in the EU and American companies would soon see the advantage of increased sales resultant of the substantial price reduction.

Development Opportunities created at Independence

Independence in Zimbabwe was a financially exciting time, whilst the economy was diversified resultant of economic sanctions, during UDI a clique controlled the economy and monopolies were formed. As is often the case in any war there are those that become wealthy as a result and, within the economy it is not about politics it is about profit. The Commercial and Industrial chains were removed and whilst the indigenous population may consider it only affected them, it in fact gave new opportunities to those of all races.

By way of example there were those manufacturers who had access to the subsidised South African steel allocation for Zimbabwe during UDI who instead of utilising it to the benefit of the country sold it through the back door to such countries as Italy for personal wealth and foreign exchange.

From the webmasters point of view it was an opportunity to develop Zimbabwe through Intellectual Property and new Industry. The machinery of Industry needed updating and replacement and with a little investment from the First World the future would be secure.

Unfortunately this was not to be as, from the outset, the First World policy was to invest in anything other than Commerce and Industry, that very area that would build the future of Zimbabwe. One would have thought that given the 15 years of sanctions and the failure of the then British Governments to address UDI, that this would have been the priority as a way of compensation to the incoming government and Zimbabwe.

Additionally the initial attitude of the first world was to support effective economic sabotage resultant of first world opposition to local Zimbabwe social political policy.

Thus the advice and investment of the kind given to Japan was not forthcomming and instead development was simply reduced in the main to building low cost housing. It were and still is better to develop the Industrial and Commercial sectors increasing jobs and the wealth of the nation thus allowing individuals to purchase and build their own property. This also provides greater social responsibility and harmony as opposed to creating rented slums and havens of crime. Unlike the World Bank and those First World Aid agencies the webmaster believes housing clearly to be secondary development to commerce and industry.

Design and Intellectual Property

Whilst stating the above design had to follow the provision of low cost housing thus the writer designed equipment to produce concrete building blocks. In the development of the machinery the writer designed and patented an adjustable vibration device capable of adjusting both the frequency and intensity of vibration, described by the Dean of the Engineering Faculty, Professor McKechnie (Civil Engineering), as a major breakthrough in Civil engineering.

Simply put, currently concrete is vibrated using one intensity and frequency of vibration, thus the strength may not be guaranteed and buildings collapse all over the world. Problem is that building materials vary considerably and in fact using vibration at the wrong intensity or frequency for he mixture may actually weaken the structure.

Whilst physically demonstrating this fact at an International Trade Fair the writer was told by a German visitor that his company was the largest building equipment manufacturer in Germany, that his research and development engineers were incapable of designing simple solutions and over-designed. That he was going to use my design in Germany selling units to the middle east and whilst congratulating the writer advised him, that he lived in Zimbabwe, that there was a shortage of foreign exchange within Zimbabwe and therefore no way that the writer could legally protect his patent in the Germany.

That he was being honest with the writer out of respect for his achievement and best he would offer was a job in Germany.

Thus, whilst receiving an award from a visiting Head of State and a letter of congratulation and appreciation from the then Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, Robert Gabriel Mugabe, illustrating support, the writer learned that international laws and agreements meant nothing unless the funding is provided to enforce same and, that the third world was therefore unlikely to achieve any meaningful development.

Whereas the first world protects and finances its intellectual property the third world doesnt see this as a priority. At the time there was one officer in the Ministry of Industry and Technology with an annual budget of ZW $250.00 (equivalent of 30 pounds at the time) representing development and intellectual property. When the writer was asked what the budget should be, he replied, about a third of the economy in a developing country.

Utilising the same design, correct frequency and intensity of vibration, road surfacing was produced by local civil engineers passing all destruction tests at the Central Scientific Institute of Research in South Africa. As opposed to tar, which may achieve a three-year life, this less expensive road surface underwent extreme tests and achieved an indestructible result, in excess of any product ever tested becoming the most durable road surface to be produced in the world.

Local production of the machinery was contracted out to various local Zimbabwean manufacturing companies. One company, Crusader Engineering Pvt. Ltd, a totally owned subsidiary of Shell and customer of one of the webmasters other companies, manufactured most of the mechanical components of the machinery for the webmaster.

It came to the webmasters attention that in breach of contract and contravention of patent and copyright, Crusader Engineering were secretly manufacturing his machinery in an adjoining factory and secretly selling it to the webmasters customers.

When the webmaster objected he was introduced to the Managing Director, General Hickman, the former commander in chief of the Rhodesian Army. Being unsatisfied with the outcome the webmaster spoke with his accountant and the senior partner of a local Law Firm both of whom claimed to have attended the same school as Hickman. They requested that I simply accept Hickmans personal apology and his word that it would not happen again rather than taking legal action against him. I accepted out of respect for my accountant and the senior Law Partner.

Within three weeks of personal apology and undertaking Hickman was again selling my machinery behind my back. Furious, the webmaster went to his office to face him only to be told that he was a former General with backing of Shell, a huge international oil company and he would do what he liked and there was nothing I could do about it. That if I wasn’t careful I wouldn’t do any business in Zimbabwe at all.

I held several meetings with the Managing Director and Company Secretary of Shell but was unsatisfied and therefore sought legal remedy. Because the legal letter writing seemed to be dragging out at the webmasters expense in that his production was effectively closed down coupled with a suspicion that there was mischief going on behind the scenes the webmaster approached his lawyer.

He had noted machinery used in the manufacture of automatic weapons at Crusader Engineerings factory and had been told that Crusader in fact made automatic weapons during the war. Being faced with Shell unfairly effectively closing his company by dragging the case out there was a need to act decisively.

He told his Lawyer that he intended to send a telex to the Board of Shell UK stating the following:-

"During UDI Crusader Engineering, a totally owned subsiduary of Shell, manufactured automatic weapons for effective use against the Crown and in support of vthe Smith Government. After Independence, in contravention of Zimbabwes laws Shell UK board members secretly supervised the destruction of excess weapons at a local foundry.

In order to effect a cover up General Hickman and others were subsequently employed by Shell.

Now, in breach of contract and contravention of copyright and patenting laws, Crusader Engineering is secretly selling my machinery behind my back.

This telex will be copied to the Times newspapers of London and New York unless, within 48 hours, Crusader Engineering is closed down and the local board of Shell permanently removed.

As a consequence, you should consider how much future oil business you will do with Africa and the Third World."

His lawyer stated that if he carried out his threat Shell would tie him up in court for years.

Crusader Engineering closed down and the local board of Shell left the country being replaced by a Managing Director from Australia.

At the time one needed Ministry of Labour permission to close your company and dismiss staff and because the board and an entire company disappeared local intelligence officers conducted an investigation visiting my offices with the personnel officer from Shell. I told them that the situation had arisen as a result of a commercial disagreement and was not a security matter as such.

I read later in the local newspaper that General Hickman was arrested and questioned but was pleased to learn that he is now a newborn Christian.

It transpired that my original suspicions were well founded and that General Hickman was using my firm of lawyers simultaneously.

It should be understood that the white community is relatively small in Zimbabwe and there were a few ex senior officers who sought the webmaster out, it was simply not the done thing to bring a former General down.

There were Oil Companies that observed sanctions during UDI and lost territory to Shell as a result, one of these privately offered considerable funding, their entire annual profits, to fund a follow up legal case against Shell by the webmaster in order that they regained territory resultant of adverse publicity. Whilst the webmaster rejected their offer he couldn’t fail to see the injustice of their predicament.

The above further illustrates the commercial and political control of the multinational in Third World countries. How they will assist with supplying/ manufacturing weapons of war and breaking sanctions simply for more sales territory. In the case of Zimbabwe, a hard covered book was published recording and documenting in detail all weapons of war, their designers and manufacturers used during UDI and sanctions, recording for posterity the part Shell and others played – "the evidence". A collectors item of note available for sale on a sister web site.

The writer is very critical of the overall design of the low cost housing projects, properties were built too close together designed by architects from Europe where space and land are at a premium. It were better to allow more land so that the occupier could expand the core house and have a small garden. As happened in the council flatland in the United Kingdom, massive overpopulated slum areas were formed with the resultant vandalism, crime and refuse collection problems.

There was however an opportunity to develop a low cost instantaneous water heater, given that there was insufficient supply of electricity to provide peak period power for traditional immersion heaters even were the funds available to install same.

There was additionally opportunity to illustrate the wisdom of local assembly of products for export to the EU as had occurred initially in Japan through the manufacture of the same item.

The writer designed and patented a small low cost heater that was similar in construction to a mini reactor. In order to meet the stringent safety requirements a method of removing electricity from water was developed and patented throughout the EU amongst other countries. The problem with other instantaneous water heaters manufactured in the UK and Europe is that British Standards and EU standards relied on a maximum water resistivity. Tap water in certain areas of the EU exceeds the required resistivity meaning that electricity can dangerously pass through the conductive particles in the water. British and EU standards require that a earth be positioned at the water outlet – If water pipes are not connected to the electrical earth or the earth is defective and live there will be a fatality. Products are on sale in the EU simply because the EU standards electrical testing circuit is wrong, anything tested with such a circuit will pass. The writer redrafted the electrical circuit for the South African EU testing station, SABS.

Simply put, modern shower heads and water pipes are plastic and if an earth is placed at the outlet the fastest route to earth is through you to the water drain. It is the one electrical appliance that is safer with no earth.

Included in the patent was a method of removing electrical charges from the water particles by spraying the water several times prior to it exiting the pipe or showerhead.

Simply put, if one looks at a photograph of spraying water it consists of unconnected droplets of water, therefore electricity cannot pass through it and each droplet loses its capacitance charge as it is resprayed. This no longer relied on the lack of impurities in the water. Products in the UK rely on distance and the lack of impurities in the water coupled with the earthing system of your home and condition of other electrical appliances. They are not safe. Simply put, if you are using a faulty electric iron or electric cooker and someone is showering simultaneously it is possible that they will be electrocuted as electricity will pass through them from the earthed water outlet on the shower to the water outlet drain below.

Space age plastics (strategic materials for which authority for use was necessary) were used in the construction for increased resistance to heat.

A team of engineers from the EU patenting office visited the assembly factory in Zimbabwe curious to see how such an item could be produced in the third world. They were impressed with both the quality of the product and the fact that every item was tested.

The lightness of the item meant that it could be landed in the EU for about 3 pounds a water heater. It again was not a throwaway item, spare elements and other spares being readily available with every unit being tested prior to dispatch. Even the shower rose was custom designed to remove easily and all water outlet holes tapered so that a slight tap would remove any foreign body blocking a hole (patented). It amazed the writer that no other shower rose had that facility and users had put up with outlet hole blockages for years trying to free them with a pin or other sharp object. The nearest water heater in price in the UK at the time was around 90 pounds.

An exercise was carried out in Israel by a company that wished to manufacture under license but, their assembly cost was far in excess of ours.

It was thus a highly competitive item was ready for export to the UK tested to British and EU standards and in excess of same. It was then the writer was made aware of the trade protection policies in the UK as applied by DTI and the then British Government towards finished goods from the Third World. It was the intent to submit the item to British Standards UK for retesting anticipating strong opposition from competitors. Prior to this trade samples had been given to a British distributor for that purpose and to assess the quantum of his proposed order.

We received information that our product had been condemned as dangerous by DTI of the British Government but were unable to establish from Zimbabwe precisely who was responsible for this erroneous statement. A senior representative of our local standards association flew to UK to investigate. His report was astounding, an officer of DTI claimed that a unit had been sent to him, hack sawed in half by a UK competitor, and he apparently stated, without embarrassment, that in that condition it was dangerous and he issued the national warning published in trade magazines and newspapers. However, he would have no objection to it in its normal state. It is thus that we had made arrangements for testing with British Standards only to be condemned prior to even the sample being submitted. No export for resale had been undertaken to the UK. It is clear from the detailed report containing the DTI officers name and position, that there was some collusion, possibly even corruption, by a competitor. It is a fact that most electrical items would be unsafe if hack sawed in half.

This left the writer with the option of suing the British Government as the adverse advertising was such that consumer resistance would be inevitable.

As Zimbabwe does not have the foreign exchange to sue the British Government, the only alternative was to drop Britain as an export destination. It is sad that such dishonesty exists within the core of the British Government, it were better that they said we dont want to import finished products into the United Kingdom or relied on the British Standards Association. This was an item that had already been tested to British Standards by two testing stations, had passed EU standards at an official testing station and the European patents office had issued a patent. (Patents are not issued for unsafe inventions.) All labels were in compliance with British Standards and referred to the British Standard it had been tested to etc.

The product has been exported worldwide for fifteen years without complaint, having a 100% safety record, better results than a great many British products.
